Toshiba Selects Crystal's Audio IC for Tecra Notebook and Portege Ultraportable Multimedia PCs

Semiconductor Corporation announces that Toshiba has incorporated the Crystal CS4232 audio subsystem IC in its Portege ultraportable computer and Tecra Series of high-performance notebook PCs.

The multimedia capabilities of Toshiba's Tecra 500, 710, 720 and 730 Series and Portege 650CT include Zoomed Video (ZV) technology for advanced applications such as MPEG full-motion video playback and Crystal's highly integrated audio subsystem for industry-leading audio fidelity. With this combination, Toshiba's new notebooks give mobile users multimedia performance that equals or surpasses even the most advanced desktop systems. The new PCs are marketed in the U.S. by the Computer Systems Division of Toshiba America Information Systems (TAIS).

Crystal's audio subsystems are the most comprehensive and widely used integrated audio solutions. Crystal's audio ICs are the industry's most complete Windows 95 compatible audio subsystems, and the only single-chip that offer complete Plug-and-Play compatibility, full-duplex operation, and true 16-bit CD-quality sound for motherboard applications. The CS4232 is the first in a family of pin-compatible devices that now includes the CS4236 with FM synthesis and the CS4237/CS4238 that add 3-dimensional sound. The product family also features advanced power management (APM), comprehensive SoundBlaster Pro compatibility and external digital volume control.

Crystal's audio subsystems incorporate APM technology that accommodates a variety of intelligent software- and hardware-driven power-saving modes from standby mode to full powerdown. From the power-saving mode, the user can resume operation in a matter of seconds, including listening to audio where the user left off. APM is especially important to notebook applications, helping extend battery life.
