Free Prepaid Cell Phones

Telecommunications companies, specifically cellular phone service providers, often offer cellular phones for free. Most of the free cell phones, however, come with a two-year contract which tie the user to the carrier. Users are also asked to pay exorbitant penalties if they decide to terminate their ties with the service providers before the end of the contract; this would cover for the heavily subsidized cell phone costs. The higher priced handsets actually come with higher priced penalties if the contract that accompanies it requires a two-year contract that is terminated too early.

Prepaid cell phones are quite harder to get for free since using one does not require applications or contracts. In fact, prepaid plans are not really advised for those who would like fancy cellular phones. The selection of prepaid handsets are actually very limited ranging from the most basic units to only the moderately featured ones. Prepaid cell phones may be bought for as little as $40.00 to as much as $150.00. Nevertheless, users who prefer prepaid cell phone plans over postpaid plans but favor fancier phones may always get their cellular phones from other sources. But they have to check their supposed carriers if these companies can configure their cell phones to match their services.

There are some carriers who offer free prepaid cell phones but these phones usually are the most basic types, even if would-be users intend to buy the most expensive prepaid credits offered by the carrier. Further, the free prepaid cell phones are actually units which are no longer as demanded by consumers. These phones were often acquired earlier on by the carriers, and they can no longer return to the manufacturers. Thusly, they are older models that are generally undesirable to customers.

Cellular phone companies are able to give free phones either online or in retail stores because they do receive commissions whenever consumers activate cell phone services. Carriers are the ones who pay these companies the commissions which they can get when they get a cellular phone plan. This is why carriers offer better deals in offering free cellular phones to monthly subscribers since they are assured of better returns by doing so.

Long Distance Phone Services

Telephone calls made outside the local calling area of a specified location are offered by a long distance phone service company. In general, it is safe to say any call made outside of your own area code - be it another city, state, or even country - will qualify as a long distance call and carry the associated charges.

Local calls generally cost less than long distance calls. The fees for long distance calls are not the same everywhere in the country and can vary depending on the service provider you are using, as well as the plan you have signed up for. In general, the most expensive calls are international calls (placed to foreign countries), but the fees vary greatly, depending on the call destination and service provider.

There are two different designations for non-local calls in the US. Regular long distance calls are designated interstate long distance calls, or inter-LATA interstate long distance calls. However, there is another type of long distance phone call, known as inter-LATA intrastate long distance calls. These are calls to numbers outside of the consumer's local LATA, but within the caller's state. Despite being a long distance call, these calling areas are not necessarily serviced by the same operator, depending on the service providers in the area and various service plans..

For larger LATAs, there is another classification which is known as local long distance or regional calling. This refers to calls that are made within a customer's LATA but are outside the area covered by their local calling plan.

Often you'll find that a local long-distance or regional call can be more expensive and actually have a higher per-minute rate than an interstate long-distance call. This is due to differences between service providers and the plans offered.

International calls are also classified as long distance calls and these are usually the most expensive call that can be placed. Nonetheless, there are many long distance providers in the US, and they are all competing with each other for business, which often leads to affordable rates and special deals for new customers.

Cordless Phones

When the phone rings, you do not have to run to the next room just to answer it. With a cordless phone, you can walk around your house, office, or garden while talking to your friend or client. You can carry the phone anywhere, as long as you stay within signal range.

The cordless phone combines two technologies: telephone and radio. The unit transmits and receives signals.

There are two major parts to a cordless phone. It has a base connected to the telephone wire connection. It is responsible for receiving signals that are transformed into electrical signals. The electrical signals are converted by the base into an FM radio signal. The second part, on the other hand, is the handset which the user carries around. This is the part of the device that receives the FM radio signal broadcasted by the base. The radio signal is then transformed into an electronic signal, which in turn, is converted into sound as it passes though the phone speaker.

The same process happens when the user talks into the mouthpiece. A second FM radio signal is sent out to the base. The base does the reverse of the process to send it to the caller's phone unit. This capability is made possible by what is called the duplex frequency. Two sets of FM radios and electronic signals are transmitted to the same devices at the same time.

But because you are dealing with radio signals here, there is always the risk of other people picking up your signals through radio scanning devices. People can also steal your phone line and rack up expensive telephone calls. All a person needs to do is bring his cordless phone near your house. If you have compatible phones and have not activated your password protection protocol, the person can go right ahead and make calls on your behalf, without you knowing it.

Wireless Phones

Wireless phones have become perfect tools to keep people connected with each other, even during these days when life is very fast-paced. Wireless telecommunications are actually a product of the age-old form of communication called the telegraph. From the time the telegraph was invented, it underwent several transformations until it became capable of handling wireless communication.

Wireless phones can be bought in a number of stores today. The Internet can also be a good source for selecting the best wireless phones. There are several models to choose from, each model created specifically to cater to a certain group of people. The more colorful ones are intended for the younger users while the sophisticated and elegant ones are made for more mature users and professionals.

There are several wireless phone plans to choose from. Each package consists of unique features. Some may provide more free minutes while others may provide more short-messaging services. Not long ago wireless phone plans may have seemed impractical because of their high costs, but with the changing times the need for services included in such wireless phone packages has made it an attractive way to cut on the costs of phone bills.

However, a wireless phone owner who still does not see the need to buy a wireless phone plan can opt for a prepaid phone service. This has been especially helpful for parents who want to control the phone costs of their children. Unlike wireless phone plans, prepaid phone services do not involve long-term contracts. However, the services that may be offered by prepaid phone services may pale in comparison to those offered by other wireless phone plans.

Because of the popularity of wireless phone plans, several rules on how to use them have already been laid out. These rules may be called wireless phone etiquette because their purpose is to guide owners on the right way of using their phones. An example of good etiquette includes setting wireless phones to silent mode whenever the user is in a public place, such as a movie theater or church.

Today, wireless phones are undergoing continuous innovations. There are now phones that are capable of functioning as portable offices, complete with email and access to the Internet. More developments on wireless phones can be expected as more people continue to include such technological tools in their lifestyles.

Wireless Service Providers

Wireless service providers are also called wireless carriers, mobile phone operators, or cellular companies. Simply put, their main function is to provide mobile phone services to subscribers.

Wireless service providers need to obtain a license to be able to operate in a certain country. The license is used to acquire a radio spectrum. The radio spectrum varies depending on the types of services that the provider intends to offer. Usually, radio spectrum licenses can be bought through an auction.

An emerging type of wireless service providers is called mobile virtual network operators (MVNO). They operate very much like regular service providers do. The main difference is that MVNO do not have a network of their own. They only lease a network from an existing wireless service provider. The first MVNO was launched in United Kingdom in 1999.

The terms and conditions of the MVNOs with the regular wireless service provider vary depending on the contract they have agreed upon. But in general, MVNOs still reserve the right to modify their own tariff structures. While they may not own their own wireless infrastructure, some MVNOs have a home location that enables them to use the services of several cellular companies.

Traditional wireless service providers agree to partner with MVNOs for three major reasons. First, MVNOs may help them reach a larger market. Not all traditional cell companies are capable of reaching out to all segments of the market. Through MVNOs, they can expand their market. Second, MVNOs may also help cell companies to better utilize their networks by generating larger economies. This way, they can better promote new services such as 3G. Lastly, MVNOs can be helpful in reaching customers with highly-specialized needs.

Today, there are about 200 MVNOs worldwide. These can be found in different countries such as the Netherlands, Finland, Australia, and Belgium. In other countries like France and Austria, MVNOs are also beginning to emerge. Those countries that already have several MVNOs can expect lower growth in terms of new MVNOs because the market in such places has already become highly saturated.

Are Mobile Phones the New Tobacco?

I think most of us a familiar with the tobacco wars of recent times and how it is has manifested itself into aspects of our lives through issues like smoking at public venues, lawsuits from addicts suing manufacturers, corporate sponsorship of sporting events like Formula 1 and advertising in general, pregnant mothers, etc. I think most people would concede that if cigarettes and tobacco were invented today, they would never pass organisations like the Therapeutic Goods Administration who are responsible for clearing products for safety before being released to the Australian market. However could we now have a new tobacco brewing on our doorsteps.

There is a growing wave of scientists who believe mobile phones will be the new tobacco. Thus terms like passive mobile use and usage bans in public may be a realistic possibility. Like tobacco companies in the past, mobile companies deny any link between their product and things like cancer. In fact phone manufacturers spend vast amounts of money discrediting findings that say otherwise. Insiders have come out and said that long term use may be dangerous and warning information is now made available. Now a growing momentum of lawsuits are being filed, so far all have been dismissed. There are even now support groups to help people who are addicted to their phone and people as young as 6 are found to be heavy users. It bears a lot of similarities to tobacco. However phone companies are not making their product addictive like tobacco and given the global use and endless studies on mobiles there is not a conclusive study saying they are dangerous.

What does that mean you should do? Well like they say with anything, do it in moderation. Apart from the possible health risks of heavy mobile phone use, it is becoming another anti-social activity, annoying for fellow commuters in trains and patrons in movies and is spawning a whole new butchered version of the English language.

The Merits Of Using Contract Mobile Phones

Mobile phones have become an indispensable part of modern living. There are people who cease to function if their handsets are not around them. Even if most people do not go to that extent, many of us use our mobile phones quite frequently for calling, messaging, downloading of mobile phone wallpapers or for playing mobile Java games. And it would be in our interest to go for contract mobile phones.

The fact cannot be denied that pay as you go mobile phones have their own advantages. They are ideal for people who do not use their mobiles that often. The top-up cards can be bought from nearby stores and supermarkets quite easily and without any hassles.

However, the best deals in mobile phone usage come in the form of contract mobile phones. Mobile phone users in the UK would vouch for this fact. This is because all the leading network operators in that country devise the best deals as contract mobile phone deals and that too on the most “in-demand” models of mobile phone handsets. The line rentals are affordable, the tariff structures are cost-effective. Free gifts such as free monthly line rentals for a pre-specified period are part of many such offers.

Thus, for a typical mobile phone user, the use of contract mobile phone entails a number of benefits. For one, he gets to use the latest and most sophisticated mobile phone handsets at industry leading costs. In many of these deals, the mobile phones are offered absolutely free as integral part of such offers. Secondly, with a contract mobile phone, an avid user can accrue significant savings in his phone bills. He can choose a specific tariff structure that incorporates his exact talking habits and get the maximum value for the amount of money spent.

As of now, anyone interested in acquiring contract mobile phones can easily do so by going online. A host of online mobile phone shops and retailing sites can be accessed that offer some of the best deals from leading mobile phone networks. The deals are devised on the most sophisticated handsets from Motorola, LG, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Thus, the availability of contract mobile phone deals has also brought the latest mobiles closer to different categories of people.

Why Do People Like Customizing Their Mobile Phones?

After fulfilling the desire of buying the latest mobile phone, comes another desire to make your handsets unique. After buying a mobile phone, mobile owners like to customize or personalise it by using mobile phone accessories. People are willing to pay for ringtones, wallpapers, and themes to make their mobile phones stand out from the rest. But do you know why do they spend money just to customise a piece of electronic equipment? One of the most compelling reasons is their obsession with their mobile phones. They like the portability of their mobile phones as they carry it wherever they want. They can bring it to a date, into movies, business meeting, on a vacation and wherever they wish to take it to.

Mobile users are starting to recognize that how essential mobile phone accessories are. They want to make their mobile phones as personal as possible to fit it in their standard way of living. They are aware that these mobile accessories can help them make their phone unique and are also an added protection.

Mobile accessories like ringtones have their own importance. If there were no ringtones, our mobile phones would be of no use. As the basic purpose of a mobile phone remains to make and receive calls on the move, without ringtones we would not have been able to fulfill this purpose. Another accessory is mobile games that provide entertainment on the go. Other accessories like mobile cases and covers give protection to your mobile phones.

These days you can find a huge number of online mobile shops offering exciting mobile accessories with the latest mobile phones at reasonable prices. Other amazing offers available are cheap mobile phones, special discounts, free mobile phones, free accessories and lots more.

So if you are an interested buyer of mobile phones and mobile phone accessories, just browse through the special offers and avail the best deal.

Technology Based Features Dominate the Latest Mobile Phone Handsets

For years now the mobile phone manufacturers have been attempting to pack increasingly sophisticated and numerous technological functions into smaller and smaller handsets. Recent years have seen the addition of functions such as Bluetooth, MP3 players and GPRS become standard features of our mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia and LG and other major manufacturers of mobile handsets are constantly innovating and periodically herald the arrival of the 'next generation' of mobile phones. The next generation is underpinned by technological features and functions that become the norm within handsets and are fervently consumed by the public whilst the mobile phone companies hibernate for the following months seeking to unearth the next batch of technologies for the generation to come. So with the rapid development that we have seen in the mobile industry to date, what can we expect to see in the 'next generation' of handsets that will form the latest mobile phones and how they will differ from the current batch of phones available from mobile phone stores and online retailers.

A good place to keep up to date with the rumours emanating from mobile phone manufacturers is, of course, the online tech blogs and news sites. Recent rumours doing the rounds are that a refined version of Google Mobile Maps is being developed for integration into handsets. Google won't be charging for the technology but mobile networks may charge a fee fort the technology. Google Mobile Maps is downloaded via the phones web browser and provides up to date directions and traffic information to your mobile. The keypad on the phone can be used to move the area of the map allowing you to plot journeys and identify traffic problems en-route. The 'get directions' function allows you to plot start and end points for a journey, essentially allowing your mobile phone to act as a GPS system.

Gaming is high on the agenda for mobile phone manufacturers and much work is being done to increase the functionality and playability of mobile phones to accommodate better gaming. Game developers, Square-Enix are currently developing Final Fantasy 13 for PS3 but are also developing an separate version of the game, Final Fantasy Agito, for use on mobile phones – just one example of a number of sophisticated gaming developments for mobile phones.

Samsung Phones Faring Well in the Mobile Phone Style Charts

Niche manufacturers are carving out a healthy profit and the major manufacturers are looking to diversify their aesthetics to remain at the top.

The mobile phone has long attained a status in the collective consciousness beyond that of a simple communications device. Mobile phones are artefacts that we interact with in different ways and attribute different meanings to. One such attribute that we attribute to mobile phone sis that of the fashion accessory. Mobile phone shave attained an iconic status as identifiers of our social standing, style and preferences. As such, a growing industry is developing that focuses directly on mobile phones as fashionable artefacts.

The niche industry for tailored mobile phones is growing rapidly. The emergence of firms such as GoldVish is testament to this and the major phone manufacturers are responding with increasingly sophisticated designs focusing on the aesthetic properties of the device as well as the functionality.

A recent survey of the 'most beautiful mobile phones' reiterates this. The poll from Fosfor Gadget shows that niche models that are not available to the general public are highly regarded in the fashion world and conferences and exhibitions displaying mobile phones attract the glitterati from the fashion world to pass judgement on the latest models as well as the technophiles and market players.

The poll also demonstrates a strong effort from the major manufacturers. Of the Top Ten, Samsung has 2 entries and LG's Chocolate handset makes a strong appearance at number 2. Otherwise, though, the poll is dominated by niche manufacturers such as Helio, VIPN and Kiddi, many of which are either unavailable to the general public, or are so inhibitively priced that they remain out of reach to the mass market. Interestingly, this reveals an emerging two tier marketplace that demonstrates the position of the mobile phone as a consumer commodity to which status can be attributed.

The concept of the mobile phone might be alien to many. It can be hard to imaging that a device that is so intrinsically a part of modern life can be considered a luxury item, but it does show that the manufacturers will have to work increasingly harder to impress a fashion conscious society. Whilst the major players such as Samsung and LG along with Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola will have to continue to innovate – both in terms of the functions offered in handsets and the style of the phones themselves.

Why A Family Cell Phone Plan Might Not Be Right For You

Every day you see an ad for T Mobile's Family Plan in the newspaper or on the TV. You've got a family (maybe two) and you're itching to sign up. Well, hold your horses there for a second. Maybe this isn't the best idea for you.

Here is a list of reasons why you may not want to sign up for a family plan:

1. Your family members don't talk on the phone. Seems pretty obvious, but you'd be surprised. You could have a $50 individual plan for yourself or a $70 plan for you and your spouse who never remembers to take their phone anywhere. The math is pretty simple.

2. Your family members talk on the phone too much. I love my mother too but the thought of sharing her cell phone minutes is terrifying. To make sure there would be enough minutes between the two of us we'd have to get a very expensive plan. That's fine for my mother but if I'm splitting the cost with her I'm wasting lots of money on minutes that she'll be using.

3. Your family lives in areas with bad coverage. My family lives where there's great Sprint coverage. I live where the T Mobile coverage is excellent. For us to go in on a family plan would be pointless. One of us would always have bad reception.

4. You don't trust your family. Some people have sketchy uncles and siblings. Why give them a phone that's linked to your credit card? Bad idea.

There are many excellent reasons to get a family plan. But think of these reason before you decide. Maybe one (or more) of them apply to you.

10 Tips for Cell Phones

Here are 10 tips for cell phones that include safety and security issues.

1) Cold dangers for electronics - Do not store your cell phone in a cold environment (40 deg or below). When it warms back up, moisture can form inside and damage the electronics inside. If the phone has been exposed to cold temperatures, store in a warm environment for at least 45 minutes before turning on the power (this applies to most electronics).

2) Cell phone antenna power drain- Do not touch the antenna, this causes power drain on the phone. Some antenna's are located on the back, so watch where you put your fingers.

3) Cell phone batteries - Any type of battery can explode if damaged. Recent national news reported that a young teenage girl was seriously injured when a cell phone exploded in her pocket. That is probably only a one in a million chance of that happening, just a safety tip. If any apparent damage has happened to the battery (i.e.- dropped the phone and cracked the battery) get a new battery.

4) Cell phone charging - Always charge your phone indoors (or in your car). NEVER OUTSIDE. You might get the shock of your life.

5) Recharging your cell phone - It is best to let the battery completely discharge periodically / occasionally before recharging. It helps extend the battery life. It takes up to three complete discharge and charge cycles for a new battery to achieve it's full performance. It is also recommended to not leave them on chargers for unnecessary extended periods of times.

6) Cell phone voice privacy - It is virtually impossible to "target" your cell phone conversations (minus the government agencies). But, we have heard "random" conversations over the cell phone and on scanners. If your network offers voice privacy option, you can turn it on in your Network Services settings.

7) Clean your cell phone periodically - Keep your cell phone clean with a soft dry cloth. Do not use cleaners. Q- tip swabs come in handy if you need to clean around the keys. As an absolute last resort use diluted rubbing alcohol for cleaning plastic parts. Do so at your own risk.

8) Cell phone fire danger - Turn the cell phone off while putting gas in your car. A major oil company has issued warnings to business's about this potential danger. Some say this is an "urban legend". It was stated that static electricity caused the fires, not cell phones. The guy doing the study seems very knowledgeable (visit our website for the link). Urban legend or not, just a safety recommendation. From the Naval Safety Center "NOTE: The General Services Administration (GSA) has also listed drivers responsibilities on its web page. Included is the following statement: "DO NOT use your cellular telephone when at a gas station. Cellular phone use at gas stations or anywhere fuel is stored is hazardous. The switches and high-powered batteries in the phone can generate sparks that can set-off explosions. In one incident, a driver suffered burns and his car was severely damaged when gasoline fumes ignited an explosion while he was talking on his mobile phone near a gas pump. All electronic devices in gas stations are protected with explosive containment devices, while cell phones are not."

9) Pacemakers -Keep cell phones at least 6 inches away from pacemakers. Do not carry in breast pocket. Hold to ear opposite the pacemaker.

10) Flying - Switch cell phones off in planes. It could interfere with aircraft equipment. Whether that is true or not, I sure would not want to find out at 30,000 feet.
